Living the Dream: Define Your Ideal Life and Home

Living the Dream: Define Your Ideal Life and Home

What does ‘living the dream’ really mean?

A dream life doesn’t have to mean a bigger house, a perfect routine or a dramatic fresh start. It can mean having more freedom over your time, feeling comfortable at home and making room for the people and activities that matter to you.

When you’re juggling work, home and everyday responsibilities, your surroundings and daily routine are useful places to start. For some people, their dream life already feels within reach. For others, it’s something they’re still working out.

For me, it means working from home, balancing life between the UK and Ireland, and feeling both content and free. Here are some practical ways to explore your own version, and the role your home can play in supporting it.

How to define your dream life

Start by asking yourself a few honest questions:

  • What does happiness feel like to you?
  • Which values matter most to you: freedom, family, purpose, balance or something else?
  • What would your ideal daily routine look like? Think about where you live, how you work and the time you spend on relationships.

Write your answers down, then turn them into a short vision statement. Use it as a reminder of what matters when you’re making decisions about your work, home and time.

For example: ‘I want a home that gives me space to focus on work, switch off afterwards and spend time on the relationships that matter to me.’

Your statement doesn’t need to sound impressive. It just needs to feel true to you.

My version of living the dream

For me, living the dream means working from home without a daily commute and having the flexibility to spend time in both the UK and Ireland. That freedom has brought me contentment and a sense of balance.

It didn’t happen overnight. It took consistent effort, honesty about my goals and a willingness to make changes when something no longer fitted the life I wanted.

Stay anchored while making changes

  • Make time to reflect. Once a month or every quarter, ask yourself where you are now and where you want to go.
  • Check opportunities against your values. If something doesn’t fit your vision, give yourself permission to say no.
  • Allow yourself to adapt. When a routine or commitment no longer supports the life you want, consider what you could change.

Create a home that supports your wellbeing

For me, improving my home is part of looking after my wellbeing. It’s about creating a space that supports the way I want to live and work, rather than chasing a picture-perfect interior.

Start with one manageable change:

  • Clear a surface you use every day.
  • Make a quiet corner cosier and more inviting.
  • Define a work zone that helps you separate work from downtime.
  • Improve the lighting where you read, work or relax.

Choose the change that best supports your daily life. You don’t need to transform everything at once.

A free toolkit to help you get started

To help you put these ideas into practice, I created Improve Your Home to Improve Your Wellbeing, a free Home Wellbeing Self-Coaching Toolkit for busy professionals in the UK.

It’s designed to help you map out your dreams, track milestones and set priorities that match your vision. Think of it as a starting point for shaping your home and life around your own version of living the dream.

Take your first steps towards your dream life

  1. Define your values and vision. Use the questions above as journal prompts.
  2. Choose three priorities. Pick goals that reflect your vision and fit the time and resources you have.
  3. Start small at home. Make one manageable change to your surroundings or daily routine.
  4. Review your progress. Revisit your goals every few months and adjust them as your priorities change.
